Here's the report:

"The worldwide market for MPEG video chips increased in 1998 to $616 million,
up from $569 million in 1997. Annual revenue growth increased 8.1% over
1997, while MPEG video chip unit shipments rose by a healthy 41.8%. This
growth occurred during a year when the worldwide semiconductor revenues
decreased 8.4%.

The top four MPEG vendors are the same as in the past two years: C-Cube, ST
Microelectronics, ESS Technology, and LSI Logic. However, although C-Cube
again finished first in unit shipments, ST Microelectronics finished first in overall
revenues. ST received a significant revenue boost from their MPEG-2 decoders
for On-Line Networks. During 1998, C-Cube shipped just over 18 million units
and recorded $199.7 million in revenues. ST shipped over 12 million chips and
had revenues of $203.0 million. ESS Technology finished third in unit shipments
and revenues, while LSI Logic came in fourth.

The four aforementioned competitors controlled 85% of the MPEG video
semiconductor revenue in 1998. LuxSonor, Sigma Designs, Philips, Winbond,
and others accounted for the remainder of sales revenues. As more and more
digital television products are rolled out, we firmly believe that the MPEG video
chip market will see growth in unit volumes and will continue to attract new
semiconductor vendors. For example, Conexant recently announced back-end
set top box chips that handle the MPEG-2 decoding. In addition, IBM recently
announced an MPEG-2 decoder targeted at the set top box market.

In 1998:
C-Cube: 18 million units & $199.7mm in revenues.
ST: 12 million chips & $203.0mm in revenues.
ESS Technology came in third in unit shipments and revenues
LSI Logic came in fourth

ST received a significant revenue boost from their MPEG-2 decoders for
settops.
