More on flat panel display avaliability Copyright 1999 CMP Media Inc. Electronic Engineering Times May 24, 1999 LENGTH: 229 words HEADLINE: Resurgence of LCDs gives a lift to equipment maker BYLINE: Craig Matsumoto BODY: San Jose, Calif. - A continued shortage of flat-panel displays and an unexpected hike in display prices are spelling pleasant surprises for equipment makers, who had expected a flat year. In particular, Photon Dynamics, which makes test and inspection equipment for the flat-panel industry, managed a profit of $83,000 on revenue of $6.7 million for the quarter ending March 31. The company had lost $1.5 million the previous quarter, victimized by sharp price declines for liquid-crystal displays. "We went through some pretty tough times last year," said Vincent Sollitto, chief executive of Photon Dynamics. "Coupled with the economic crisis in Asia, where 99.9 percent of the stuff is made, our bookings went into the toilet." But fortunes have shifted in the LCD market, enough so that manufacturers in Japan, Korea and Taiwan are building factories to meet the demand (see April 19, page 10). In turn, that has erased the gloomy predictions that companies like Photon Dynamics had for the first part of 1999. Prices on 12.1-inch-equivalent displays had fallen to $220 from $400 by the end of last year, Sollitto said. That figure has rebounded to $300 thanks to increasing demand and ongoing display shortages. In addition, notebook OEMs are trying to negotiate six- and 12-month contracts with display suppliers.
