The problem hasn't been the software...it has been the fact that MSFT has been tapping into the network...

Microsoft isn't tapping into the network, anymore than anyone using rival email software. That's like saying if you use Pacific Bell you are tapping into Bell Atlantic. This is just pointless bickering by companies that have virtual monopolies. If the monopolies involved cared about the consumer, this stuff would be open, but monopolies don't have to care about consumers. AOL and Microsoft have always sucked. Neither makes any money on this stuff, how idiotic can you get?

The only advantage I can see Apple getting here is a relationship with AOL that guarantees continued development of Netscape which now is a legal hostage of AOL.

And let me get in my 2¢ about AOL and Netscape here. Netscape was getting worse before AOL got it. I'm sure it'll get worse faster now that the idiots at AOL own it. In fact when AOL bought Netscape I thought it was so that they could shelve the product like Quark did with mTropolis.

It's really gotten to the point where it's like voting. We just choose the lesser of two evils. Hell I'd go with the Great Satan Bill here.
