Another stock to buy is CRUS. I believe both ALSC and CRUS will be up significantly by year end.

< It's amazing to me that a stock can increase to this extent when old news has been reiterated. Can someone please tell me if this is still the same company that can't turn a profit on their core business despite a booming market. The same company that was 50% below analyst's expectations regarding their last quarter's earnings. The same company with inept management. The same company whose stock went from 11 1/2 to 7 1/2 on the exact same news. Nothing has changed. When you respond to this post, can I hear about something other than UMC, BRCM, Chartered, etc. Don't make the same mistake twice and take your profits.>

Yup! And think what can happen if the management gets into act and does something to fix the valuation!

Actually, the stock would have gone up more today if not for the institutional sellers. I-watch is showing that institutions are doing some selling at above 10 1/2. Management should institute a buy-back to absorb all those weak institutional and retail hands.

Guys, I know you know this old info but I thought it'd be interesting to give some evidence of the $21 a share valuation.

Market cap of ALSC is 41.5M shares x $10.550 = $435M (353M yesterday at open)
Value of UMC shareholding as of yesterday =
[(247.7M shares+35.6M shares)* 63 NTD] / 32.26 (xchge rate)= $553M
Book value of UMC: $94M
Book value of Chartered Foundry : $56M
Market value of shareholding in Broadcom: $60M
Cash: $8M
Other marketable securities:$xM
Total value of above assets: $675M+
Market cap: $435M
Difference: minimum $240M!!!
Based on a mix of market and book value, we have a value of $16+ for ALSC.

I guess you can call that a stock trading under book..

The best is that Alliance has semiconductor operations (no kidding) and, besides making DRAM and SRAM, makes very hot components for gigabit and terabit routers (have not yet hit the bottom line).

I'll let you make the math for the operating earnings for 2000.
