On the Airtouch rollout, it will be interesting to see how they handle us "VIP's" who the satphone (which is Globalstar) folks say will have first option to buy a handset. I hope that is not the case because they should distribute the expected limited supply of the first phones to those with the highest expected usage. That ain't me!

MCOM has such a service via short-range FM that runs at 28kps, soon to be 128kps.

Beware before comparing data rates that you are comparing apples vs oranges. The 28kbps data rate of the MCOM system is the rate of a SHARED channel. It is not the data rate that one user will see, unless there happens to be no one else in the area.
