Thanks for the info Ken,

I know that market cap has nothing to do with book value calculation but I just don't have time to value Chartered Semi so I chose to present a value based on a mix. Roughly speaking, I assume you know that the market value of ALSC's assets+the value of its operations (based on good ol' DCF) should ideally be approached the market cap.

I hope you can come up with a correct valuation and show it to us. That would be very interesting.

BTW how do you come up to $19.26 based on UMC and BRCM alone? I checked the figures and the ones I used in my message seemed to be correct. Which one was wrong?

The correct book value formulas have been posted previously on several occasions. You may wish to review them.<i/>

I was not aware that there were formulas to calculate a book value. The last time I checked (worked for a big 6 acounting firm for some years) the book value corresponds to the price paid for a certain asset. It doesn't move unless some accounting/tax event occurs such as merger and exchange of shares. At that time (not always) the book value is revalued either up or down (BS impact) and a profit/loss expressed in the P&L.
