Drought destroying vital U.S. pastureland-Glickman
WASHINGTON, July 29 (Reuters) - Drought is gripping parts of the United States and destroying pastureland that is vital to U.S. livestock feeding operations, Agriculture Secretary Dan Glickman said Thursday.
Glickman said that the Mid-Atlantic, parts of the Pacific Northwest, Northern Florida and Southern Texas are all in the midst of a drought.
''The ones that have been most affected are those who raise forage for livestock,'' he said on a C-SPAN call-in program.
''That means that feed is not going to be there,'' he said. ''They (animal producers) will have to either buy it at much higher prices in the local area or it is going to have to be trucked in.''
Glickman said he will meet with farmers in the Mid-Atlantic states on Monday.(cont)
