But what if Netscape 5 comes complete with an extra
2"x10" window at the top with 'special' AOL advertising. What if they make it so that every time
you click to another URL there is a commercial break you must click through to get to the next
page?

-------

Netscape Navigator (i.e. Mozilla) is now open-source. AOL no longer has a say in the code. There aint no chance in hell we'll see crap like that occuring when the final version of Mozilla 5 is released.

If you want to check out a beta, try:

If you don't think those things are good, you shouldn't live in a market economy.
That is the market at work...there will always be big fish and little fish, competitors and niche players.
That's life.
What you described in the 1st 3 paragraphs isn't indicative of anything but your flawed views of how the market works. MSFT's position is doomed, by the very forces that drove out the big auto players.
However, as you pointed out, AOL is the king of positioning, which will provide them w/lots of money for years to come. But not because they operated at a loss. Virtually all ISP's operate at a loss...why aren't they overtaking AOL? You're right...not because of quality, but ease of use. AOL is king of ease of use. That is very important to 65% of the populace.
What's wrong w/swallowing little fish? Nothing. Remember when the RR was king? Jay Gould was God. For a little while. Big companies lose focus.
Only GE has really maintained its position over the years. Why? For the same reasons AOL will remain for years to come. They concentrate on a core product, but prepare themselves to move into burgeoning markets, then compete at a very high level in them.

I love AAPL, and I think it is a great partnership that will benefit both companies tremendously. We should thank AOL AND AAPL for the judicious use of position and resource.
