Delphi's release FYI
delphiauto.com

For Release: July 27, 1999

FLINT, Mich., /PRNewswire/ -- Delphi Automotive Systems (NYSE: DPH) is investing $15.5 million in several of its U.S. facilities, according to Donald L. Runkle, president of Delphi Energy & Engine Management Systems. "These investments in lean manufacturing and in upgrading our facilities are important to our competitiveness," Runkle said. "We want to be recognized by our customers as their best supplier."

Delphi will invest $6.8 million in its generator operations located in Anderson, Ind. The investment is for the installation of new equipment and tooling for a lean generator assembly cell to produce a new high-output generator for a future truck program.

Delphi also is investing $1.4 million in its battery production process. Delphi will install new equipment and tooling for battery production in all four of Delphi's U.S. battery plants -- Anaheim, Calif.; Fitzgerald, Ga.; New Brunswick, N.J.; and Olathe, Kan. The equipment includes technological improvements in the plate manufacturing process. This new process will help improve quality and material flow.

In addition, Delphi is investing $2.8 million in its Fitzgerald, Ga., facility to install lean equipment for battery production. The new equipment will combine two operations and will improve material flow and provide ergonomic improvements for the operators.

Also in Fitzgerald, Delphi is investing $1 million to replace and upgrade brick flooring. This new flooring will provide better impact, abrasion and chemical resistance, and offers improved environmental safeguards.

In Rochester, N.Y., Delphi is investing $3.5 million to complete the last phase of a re-roofing project at its Lexington Avenue plant.

I believe the $15.00 price target was based on the current outstanding shares plus an additional 2 Million issue for raising of capital for SOFC cell development.

Global Thermoelectric's site update was specific about their progress in developing an Auxiliary Power Unit , plus a more specific use of an A.P.U. in trucks. The highest priority of the California Clean Air Board is to reduce the amount of particulates from diesel trucks. I interpret this as the diesel S.O.F.C. research is complete. Delphi's announcement (yesterday) of building a new line to produce a new generator for trucks indicates they have a licensing agreement with Global Thermoelectric.

A point of interest is that Delphi was not shy to publicly dispel any misinformation when Toyota publicly claimed the two of them had talks. To me this indicates that if Delphi and Global didn't have a deal Delphi would have done the same thing by now.

I completely agree CH4, the silence of both Delphi and Global Thermoelectric speaks volumes. It is a big puzzle to put together and we don't know how all the pieces will fit yet but piece by piece it is starting to take shape. And thank you CH4 for all the excellent research you have found and posted here at S.I.!

I would like to know more technical info about the Auxiliary Power Unit but I have been unable to access GLE's website during the last few days, how about the rest of you guys?

I believe the term "Auxiliary Power Unit" was also mentioned in one of the news releases between BMW and Delphi. I am quite interested how this APU works, what exactly it does, and what ancillary components or systems it may replace or change around the Internal Combustion Engine.
