Well the 1st AOL IM "standard" will be you have to own a AAPL product

Look who is setting the rules :

"DULLES, Virginia--America Online said it has formed an advisory group
that includes its chief technology officer, Marc Andreessen, and Apple
Computer's interim chief executive, Steve Jobs, to set standards for
sending instant messages online.

AOL said it asked Microsoft to join the group. The companies have been battling over how
to provide instant messaging services since last week, when Microsoft introduced MSN
Messenger, a program that lets users link with AOL's service. They haven't discussed their
differences on messaging, said AOL spokeswoman Ann Brackbill."
