Palm VII Could Cost an Arm and a Leg
Windows Magazine , August 01, 1999, Issue: 1008
Section: Reviews author:Mike Elgan
(http://www.techweb.com/se/directlink.cgi?WIN19990801S0024)

Summary: Like its predecessors, the new Palm VII Connected Organizer, from 3Com's Palm Computing division, is both useful and easy to operate. Unfortunately, the Palm VII's key innovation-wireless connectivity-is simply too costly for most potential...

From the article: "...Aside from the gee-whiz wireless feature, the latest version of the Palm marks a technological step backward: It's essentially a Palm III. It offers neither the Palm IIIx's 4MB of memory (it's got 2MB), nor the Palm V's stylish svelteness and rechargeable battery. At 5.25 by 3.25 by 0.75 inches and 6.7 ounces with batteries, it's bigger and heavier than any other Palm-about twice as thick as the Palm V, and about 3/4 of an inch longer (Palm V is 4.5 by 3.1 by 0.4 inches and 4 ounces). And battery life is about two or three weeks, compared with at least a month for the Palm V...."

Delivering Handheld Retail Solution

Summary: What does it take to rock the foundations of the retail market? A small VAR called Pen Computer Solutions Inc., a start-up ISP
called BarPoint, and Palm Computing's Palm VII, the first sub-$600 pocket-sized PC with wireless Internet access.

From the article: "... While Palm VII is being hailed as the product that will break down corporate resistance to extending the enterprise into the shirt pockets of its mobile workforce, no one is betting the farm on Palm VII being the commercial handheld of choice right now..."
<clip>
"... Palm VII's disadvantages include lack of realtime messaging and notification capabilities, he said. "It has to be used for vertical apps where time-critical incoming messaging isn't important," Delaney added..."

No mention of other 3COM products (ie. switches, NIC cards, modems) that provide "total enterprise" solutions integrating the corporate WAN.

How can supporting WAP be a blunder. It shows how flexible COMS has become. Adapting and acclimating in this very fast and innovative environment is a key to success for any company. I think COMS' perspicacity is to be applauded. Now I am beginning to have even more faith in COMS.
