Sam; This industry is amazing from the basis of technological advances and how it has faced its many challenges. I remember a Herb Greenberg column (not my most favorite writer) talking about how SEG had managed to still maintain profitability while storage prices had went from $10 per megabyte to under .10 per megabyte (or something like that). No other industry has had that success - not the CPU manufacturers; the Software Vendors or the Networkers.

I think WDC is more of a victim of not keeping up with technology; not having the right model (integrated vertical manufacturing; and heavy enough capital asset sheet. A good case can easily be made that this will not be the perfect model everytime and that under different conditions WDC would have flourished while QNTM; SEG and Fujitsu would have suffered. I think it is premature to bury or praise any of these executives - I do think that WDC could have done a better job of promoting a success to Hagerty though. It will be interesting to se if they try to replace him or just sell the company....
