OK, I'LL DO THEIR WORK FOR THEM Excerpt from NEALZ NUZE July, 28,1999 Let me weigh in on this tax cut issue again for a moment. First of all, it's hard to take the Republicans seriously when various leaders try to put special provisions in a tax cut bill to take special care of special people in their home districts. For instance, there is a provision in the House version that eliminates a type of taxes on fishing tackle boxes. Now just where is the largest U.S. maker of fishing tackle boxes? Why it seems that the largest U.S. manufacturer of fishing tackle boxes is in the home district of the Speaker of the House, Dennis Hastert. That, my friends, is politics as usual.Yesterday we were treated to the results of a NBC News Poll. It seems that 55 percent of the people in this country would rather have the government spend the "surplus" on various social programs than use it for a tax break. Well, duhhhhhh. OF COURSE 55 percent of Americans would rather see more social spending than tax cuts. That's because these folks don't pay taxes. Let's see --- if the bottom 50 percent of income earners only pay 4.8 percent of all federal income taxes, that would probably mean that the bottom 55 percent pays around six or seven percent. Wow! You could see why they would be screaming for a tax cut, can't you! None of this, of course, was mentioned on the NBC story. Now --- to help the producers and news writers at NBC, I'll write their copy for them. Here goes ..... "An NBC News poll released today shows that 55 percent of Americans would rather see increases in spending on social programs like Medicare and education than a tax cut. A look at Treasury Department statistics might explain these results. The lowest 55 percent of income earners in America pay a very small percentage, less than 8 percent, of total income taxes. Therefore they would have more to gain from increases in government spending on social programs than they would on a cut in the marginal tax rate." Yeah, in my dreams.boortz.com
