Darn it, ed. There you go again. Japan's problem definitely IS inflation. They financed their expansion with real estate collateral. Inflation was rampant, especially real estate prices. When real estate prices became unrealistic, the bottom fell out of their expansion. Now people own real estate that they can't sell.

Another problem is the structure of Japan's ecomony--the banks own everything--literally. Their system is based on mideval concepts of ownership--not capitalism (even as we know it). The market forces there are hostage to a few people.
