Terayon Cable Modems Selected by Leading Belgian Cable Operator
Terayon Increases Presence in Belgian Broadband Market
LIEGE, Belgium--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 9, 1999--L'Association Liege d'Electricite Teledis (ALE - Teledis), the second largest cable operator in Belgium with more than 300,000 subscribers, is deploying cable modem systems from Terayon Communication Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq:TERN - news).
ALE - Teledis is using Terayon's cable modems to provide residential subscribers in the city of Liege with fast Internet access and local businesses with high-speed data services.
''The superior performance and outstanding reliability of Terayon's cable modem systems have given us the capability and the confidence to offer broadband services to commercial and residential subscribers,'' said Jacques Delderenne, general manager of ALE - Teledis. ''Based on the fast time-to-market provided by Terayon in Liege, we plan to offer data services with Terayon over our other cable systems.''
In addition to the high-capacity and reliability of Terayon's systems, ALE - Teledis selected Terayon's cable modem system because of its ability to operate in the wide range of network conditions typical of most cable systems. ALE - Teledis was able to capitalize on these advantages to deploy in only a few weeks and with significantly less costly network upgrades.
Particularly important for the operator, is the Terayon systems' support for QoS (Quality of Service) and its robust return-path performance, both of which were key in enabling ALE - Teledis to provide local businesses with a cost-competitive alternative to traditional European high-speed data solutions, such as E1 lines.
''With more than 25 years of experience, ALE - Teledis has always been a pioneering European cable operator, and was one of the first operators begin upgrading their systems to two-way in the early 1980s. We are pleased to be working with such a forward-thinking operator for this European deployment,'' said Zaki Rakib, CEO of Terayon.
ALE - Teledis has achieved approximately 95 percent penetration in its Liege system, which is a large hybrid fiber/coaxial (HFC) network that passes more than 310,000 homes. ALE - Teledis is the city-owned utility serving Liege and its surrounding areas, and is a member of the Association Cablo Operateurs pour Multimedia (ACM), a consortium of Belgian cable operators serving the Walloon region.
The ALE - Teledis order is the latest major European success for Terayon and is the second Belgian operator to choose the company's modems. In March, Terayon received an order for 225,000 cable modems and associated headend equipment from United Pan-Europe Communications (UPC), the largest independent cable operator in Europe. In addition to Belgium, the company's systems are currently deployed by European cable operators in France, Switzerland, Hungary and Ireland, as well as by major cable operators in North America, Latin America and Asia.
The Terayon cable modems are well suited to the Belgian cable market, where cable is well accepted and has the highest penetration rate in Europe. Terayon's systems incorporate sophisticated QoS capability, allowing control of bandwidth in precise increments. This allows cable operators, such as ALE - Teledis, to offer tiered services to their subscribers -- from residential Internet access to business services for data and telephony. Terayon's cable modem systems, based on S-CDMA (Synchronous Code Division Multiple Access) technology, provide reliable two-way performance over a wide range of cable systems.
Terayon Communication Systems provides cable operators with reliable, high-capacity cable modem systems that support a full range of broadband services. The company, based in Santa Clara, Calif., has sales and support offices worldwide, and is traded on the Nasdaq National Market under the symbol TERN. Terayon's European headquarters are based in Waterloo, Belgium, and the company has a network of distributors throughout Europe. Terayon can be found on the web at www.terayon.com.
