7/29/99 - The Silicon Valley Networking Lab Announces Gigabit Ethernet Equipment Testing Program


SANTA CLARA, Calif., Jul 29, 1999 (BUSINESS WIRE via COMTEX) -- TheSilicon Valley Networking Lab (SVNL) announced the launch of the industry's first
comprehensive enterprise backbone switch evaluation program.

The six-point switch testing and analysis program will be conducted during September at SVNL's facility in San Jose, in collaboration with Network World
magazine, NetCom Systems, IXIA Communications, and Ganymede Software. To date, more than two dozen leading Gigabit Ethernet backbone switching
vendors have been invited to participate on a complimentary basis, ensuring objectivity in testing and reporting.

SVNL engineers will evaluate each product in six independent, fundamental categories including price-performance, manageability, Layer 3 routing features and
performance, Quality of Service (QoS), vendor service/support, and ease of installation/configuration. The results will be published in Network World magazine's
"Gigabit Ethernet backbone switch Buyer's Guide".

Vendors invited to date include 3Com Corporation (Nasdaq:COMS), Anritsu Corporation, Asante Technologies (Nasdaq:ASNT), Cabletron Systems (Nasdaq:CS),
Cisco Systems (Nasdaq:CSCO), Compaq (NYSE:CPQ), Extreme Networks (Nasdaq:EXTR), Fore Systems (NYSE: GEC), Foundry Networks, Hewlett-Packard
