<< "Online" communities aren't the real thing. Friends, family, those whose hands we can shake and smiles we can see, are. >> Tom- Starting in 1994, I exchanged investing thoughts with folks on Compuserve. One day, one particular poster (who was also a volunteer monitor of the threads)sent me a private msg and challenged me to a friendly stock game. I obliged. We both chose two stocks and on a regular basis traded barbs about how we were each going against the other. He was pretty sharp and a good sport. After a few mos the novelty wore off and we stopped msging each other, but we still folloowed each other's posts on the public msg boards. Then at one point he stopped posting completely. After a few weeks I got curious and asked another member if my pal was on vaca or something. Turns out, my pal had stopped on the highway to help another motorist who was having car trouble. As he approached the car, he was struck by a truck and killed. I was stunned by this news. I couldn't believe it, and to this day, I want to deny it and think it was a cruel joke by the other guy I asked. But I think it was not a joke. The guy I asked was a straight shooter, and also a volunteer thread moniter. In another case, a very knowleadgable participant with two young boys suddenly stopped posting. He had a stroke and was not expected to come out of it. Again I was quite stunned and realized how I had become acquaintances of these people, but I didn't think of them as friends. But I guess they are friends, just a bit more removed from those we can see and shake hands with. i dont know.. just rambling here. Sorry. Victor
