Precisely: in fact, a master mechanic or plumber can make a great deal more than many a college graduate...

Les,

You are correct. college is not necessary for any of those jobs, which ae all honest, respectable, and have decent wages. However, if one owns his own plumbing business, or is an electrical contractor, etc., how much better off would he be if was more efficient and optimized his wealth because he had a smattering of knowledge of accounting, economics, maybe a course in business law, whatever. Would it lower his stress level, thereby increasing his mental and physical health, and therefore increase his productivity if his overall education was higher? With a better understanding of how the world works, would he he be in a better position to take advantage of whatever opportunities life puts in front of him?

The answer is we don't know if that is the case, but I personally believe it is.
