Intel, Cisco Team Up On ADSL
(07/28/99, 9:49 a.m. ET)
By Christine Zimmerman, Data Communications

Intel has announced it will license the
technology Cisco Systems uses in its
central office DSL switches to develop
ADSL modems for use in remote
offices and homes.

Intel said the ADSL modems will help users
access the Internet up to 25 times faster than
the speediest analog modems. The modems
will be compatible with all Cisco central office
DSL gear, and they should ship by the end of
the year, Intel said.

The vendors said they hope the deal will let
Intel participate in the high-speed Internet
access market while helping Cisco protect its
DSL market position and branch into
consumer gear.

"The agreement with Intel furthers Cisco's
consumer strategy to extend high-speed access
to the home," said David Gudmundson, vice
president and general manager of the DSL and
systems software business unit at Cisco.

"...Newbridge spokesman John Lawlor denied the Ottawa-area firm was in takeover discussions with Ericsson or other suitor. ''The whole article is pure speculation,'' he told Reuters..."
