Here is a "political" subject, close to home, which can potentially unite people all across the political spectrum. It has to do with the fate of SI: Subject 29753 Les, you made a comment on the petition thread that puzzles me a bit. You said that the Beta format was primarily designed to accommodate advertisers. Could be -- but where did you see that? The impression I got from reading the Beta Test thread was that the G2Net folks just felt the site needed "improvements." In other words, the "classic site" was deemed too "old-fashioned." If the idea really was just to expand advertising, I would have expected a storm of objections. After all, many SI-ers had already been raising an unholy fuss about that teeny tiny little Datek banner on the present site. Personally, I had never even noticed it! The objections to the new site have been of another order altogether. They have focussed on the fact that the "improvements" did not extend to the message boards, which constitute SI's only raison d'etre. As a matter of fact, the reverse was true: many of the improved features recently adopted on the "old" SI were dropped on the Beta site! Instead of the search function being expanded, for example, it was contracted, so that you could no longer search for subjects on a particular thread, etc. After people started screaming about that, the Beta people promised to restore the discarded functions -- but not to improve them. And other features (like the Clubhouses) appear to have disappeared for good. At least, there has been no response to queries so far. And in any event, would it really hurt SI economically if the old site were kept up, in addition to the new one? The petition does not advocate abandoning the new version. Although...maybe G2Net should recall the fate of the "New Coke"! Customer discontent eventually forced Coca Cola to go back to "Classic Coke." Anyway, the petition is there for the signing, if anyone is interested in doing so. (It's not a vote -- so the "nays" are not invited! <gg>) jbe
