Les,
Undoubtedly, I don't disagree with you about that. There would probably be some who ae bright enough to pick up everything they need to know by watching someone with more experience.

I also agree that they could hire all the outside people they will ever need. What I am talking about is the marginal benefits that occur when you have enough knowledge to keep an eye on the outside consultants, maybe make one or two of them unnecessary, or have the confidence to analyze an opportunity on your own, without having to spend the time and resources by going to outside professionals.

I am also talking about the marginal benefits of having less stress in your life, because you are better educated and better prepared to handle a variety of situations both professionally and socially.

The alleviation of that sort of stress has proven to increase health(reduce health care experiences/improve productivity)and increase happiness(which also has advantages of the above attributes and further reduces stress, a turbo effect if you will)

These advantages are hard to measure in a finite way, but they are very real and very beneficial. How real and how beneficial is open to speculation.

Les, when I went to college, I studied all sorts of business courses and minored in accounting. To my surprise, what the pompous professors taught me was,in no way, as it was in the real world. I came to the conclusion that "higher education" is no more than learning a few fundamentals in you chosen field and four more years to grow up. Part of growing up is facing those stressful events that mark is worried about, and finding the way to relieve them. Colleges should not be in the business of molly-coddling these people and trying to protect them from the evils of the capitalist society they will have to exist in. This is one small part of the liberal scheme to provide cradle to the grave security blankets and stifle all thoughts of individual achievment.

Sorry to use part of your post to speak to the liberal contingent. TD
