According to Cahners INStat - In 1Q 99, NT was in 4th place in total multiservice WAN Packet switching (including FR), 3rd place in total ATM WAN Packet switching, and 4th place in ATM WAN Packet switching sales to carriers behind Ascend (now LU)30%, Cisco 21% and Newbridge 14%. These numbers are corroborated by Dell'oro.

While I expect NT to take share with its new Passport 15000, none of the market data services - Cahners, Dell'oro, IDC, DataQuest, Vertical Systems, et. al. - supports your contention that NT is number one in Carrier ATM.

In optical, NT is indisputably the king of OC192 closed systems with nearly every new build long haul terrestrial network in the world. However, LU sells about the same amount of optical gear as NT, with leadership in open OC48 systems, particularly in undersea applications and in incumbent carriers with messy fiber plants. Let's suffice to say that NT and LU are both selling everything they can make, are far in front of any other would be competitor, and have extremely bright futures in an increasingly optical world.

As for Internet Routers, NT is one of three companies in the world with a BGP implementation that works (CSCO and JNPR). Of these, CSCO has 85% market share in carrier router sales, so that is probably the biggest reason Mr. Chatter focuses on them. IMHO, to call him ignorant of the world around him is at least a little strong and probably baseless. You can hardly expect him to list LU's weaknesses and tout NT's strengths for a reporter.
