If both DT and Bell South want Qwest things really get interesting. In that BS can't bid based on current rules, if they're serious, a merger of equals with Qwest being the retained corporate identity may be the only way to avoid a hostile takeover. I think BS will figure a way to get the job done, and shareholders should see new all time high prices for the stock. Gary

Hello Scotsman and Gary; As you have mentioned, Phil has 40 % AND what he moved private to accomodate the BLS purchase. I think Phil is the coach and Joe ( Marino ) is the QB. There is no question in my mind that Joe knows more about the telecom world than Phil. However, Phil getting the right-a -way in the railroad had nothing to do with Joe......as far as I can determine anyway. The work of integrating USW is not that big a problem for the companies. Joe has the Bell background. He also has an idea where QWST will go. Therefore, he can see how things must go. The US Worst tag is overplayed and not accurate depending on the application. A customer who doesn't get connected or a bill error will have no effect on QWST-USW. USW has the customers. I mean.........THE LAST MILE. How would QWST use it's fibre bandwidth without it ? The QWST network is finished. What good is the network without customers ? Well, they could sell space to re-sellers with THE LAST MILE at a lesser markup or buy the customers. Then we have the.......what are the customers worth ?? First off, everyone has a telephone. Most use it for local calls. Then the interstate and intrastate calls .........then internet.....then data etc . The RBOC's have the local customers. You can't sell LD or internet or data without getting into the home or office. USW gets us into the home or office 25 million worth customers. I don't know enough to project the game plan of QWST, but the KPN and the various deals with ISP's and things that we on this thread cannot understand are bigtime plays. The only question I see is if the need for bandwidth is not as much as projected. Everybody now is laying fibre. The only areas where the selling of bandwidth is a problem is where competion exists in the same area. I don't know of anybody laying fibre in an area covered by someone else already. Well, gotta qualify that also. There is a buying of existing fibre already laid. Well, Mexico is an example. QWST and Global Crossing have bought fibre from Bestel, which is owned by Global Light.GBT. Also, QWST has the European thing with KPN. Went on longer than I expected. ac
