I would say that Merrill has missed the boat so far on LRCX.

This is from TheStreet.com in early June: "But the companies FitzGerald pegged as also-rans -- Lam Research, Mattson Technology and FSI International -- are up off their lows in similar fashion. Because each faces tough competitive issues, FitzGerald said he doesn't see the latter group as keepers, especially because cost-conscious Intel won't carry into the next decade the purchasing power it had in the 1990s."

I've been tracking Merrill's LRCX research on my site. I've included the links below:

From J Bagley's interview @ 5:30 on vcall.com :

* Said he expects the PC to surrender its lead as the major growth driver for IC's. He expects 3 areas to show strong growth: communication, networking applications, and internet connectivity.

* Lam has a "more cohesive line of etch products than our competitors"

* Where Lam was once weakest(dieletric etching), JB expects the Exelan Dieletric etcher to put Lam in the forefront of dieletric etch.

* While some are calling for a 5 year upcycle, JB does not believe we will see it. Although he said he "doesn't think the upcycle has begun." He believes we are currently in a recovery phase with the upcycle starting in 2000 and lasting for approximately 3 years.

Lam one of Michael Murphy's favorite stocks:

Excerpt:
Michael is bullish in the semiconductor and semiconductor equipment area. He is holding companies such as Lam Research (LRCX 40 3/4) and Applied Materials (AMAT 65 3/4). He has been moving money out of larger companies in that space and has been moving it into the smaller names such as Mattson Technology (MTSN 11 7/8), which is one of his favorite small cap companies in the semiconductor area.
