Smorgon Steel Improves Supply Chain With Manugistics

Company Goes Live in Less than Six Months

Utilizing Manugistics' Open Application Integration(TM)

ROCKVILLE, Md., Aug. 2 /PRNewswire/ -- Manugistics, Inc. (Nasdaq: MANU) today announced that Smorgon Steel has implemented Manugistics5 supply chain management software in less than six months. As part of their solution, Smorgon is using Manugistics Open Application Integration(TM) (OAI) to integrate the Manugistics applications to their new enterprise resource planning system. These initiatives will improve customer service and streamline Smorgon's manufacturing and distribution processes.

As Australia's second largest producer of steel and steel products, Smorgon completed Phase 1a of a systems implementation that will see the rollout of JD Edwards ERP system to the Steel Mill in Laverton, Victoria. Subsequent phases of the project will include other Smorgon business units. To support the new ERP system, Smorgon selected Manugustics5 to optimize its supply chain and inventory management and maximize its use of available resources. A team from PricewaterhouseCoopers implemented Manugistics and JD Edwards solutions in parallel at Smorgon.

"We work on long production cycles within the steel industry, so we've only got one time a month to get things right," said Greg Maclaren, manager supply chain systems, Smorgon Steel. "Manugistics will enable improvement in customer service, which we will achieve by integrating our demand, production and distribution planning processes. This will help us ensure that we have the right products, at the right location, at the right time."

"Manugistics is regarded within the industry as the best-of-breed value- added application," said Nathan Kanniappan, Executive Manager, IT Projects, Smorgon Steel. "It works well with JD Edwards, and it will give us better tools to do more analysis and planning within our supply chain. Instead of just being reactive, we can be a lot more proactive with our supply chain planning. At the end of the day, this means we will be able to provide a much higher level of service to our customers."

By continually tracking Smorgon's in-stock inventory, customer orders and the movement of raw materials into its manufacturing sites, the Manugistics solution will reduce excess inventory and let Smorgon more accurately allocate manufacturing resources according to customer demand. Among other benefits, this will enable the provision of accurate Available-To-Promise estimates for delivery of in-production stock.

"We are pleased that Smorgon Steel chose the Manugistics supply chain management solution as a major part of its new business management system," said Bruce Craig, managing director, Manugistics Australia. "With its operations competing in a market where stock availability and on-time delivery is critical to customer service and loyalty, Smorgon Steel is the type of company that will see significant benefits from the integration of their ERP system with Manugistics industry-leading supply chain optimization capabilities."
