To ALL:-

Eclipse of the Sun 11th August 1999

The Eclipse will happen on the morning (11.11 AM (British Summer Time) of Wednesday the 11th of August 1999 (The day before the Jersey Battle of Flowers).

The path of the total eclipse passes over Cornwall, Alderney, Northern France, Belgium and Luxembourg and then moves in a south-easterly direction through Germany, Austria, Hungary and beyond into Asia.

Jersey will observe a 95% eclipse.

The last eclipse of the Sun to take place in Britain was on the 29th of June 1927 - which most of us will not remember.

The next eclipse Jersey will experience will be on the 3rd of September 2081. So, unless you're feeling lucky, don't miss this one.

Because of the favourable weather conditions in Jersey, we are one of the recommended places to view the eclipse.

Alderney is one of the best places as they have good weather too and will see a 100% total eclipse - but they are fully booked.

In St Helier first contact will commence at 9.59 am.

The stage of maximum eclipse will occur at 11.16 am.

Last contact will be at 12.37 pm.

There are a number of safety issues related to observing the eclipse. Basically don't look directly at the sun without special protection or you will seriously damage your eyes.

Check with Jersey Welcome Hotels to book your stay - and good viewing.

Self-admission? Don't think so. Perhaps you should avoid mirrors? Ha-ha!! (Hmmmmmm... is that a prediction?)
