Not to start a debate with anyone but I was a Frat Rat and the experience was 100 percent (close anyway) positive.

When kids leave home some of them get drunk, do drugs and stay up past their old bedtimes. Some of them are in frats and some are not.

Other kids leave home, stop bathing, occupy the administration building and demand to be given the keys to the world.

I doubt if the death rate among "Greeks" is any different from the rest of the student body. Not to say I have the first fact to back that up.

I was in a strong "Greek" system at the University of Wyoming. I think maybe it didn't have the cultural weight of the Greek system in the South -- I think that might have been more of a Southern thing than a fraternity thing.

Maybe the culture in the West (even in frats) is more egalitarian. I know, in my house, if an Active Member acted way out of line, it was perfectly OK for a Pledge to beat the shit out of him.

If you want to eliminate Frat activities that threaten senseless tragedy, just make the officers and trustees attend an orientation each year and plainly inform them that they are subject to shutdown and confiscation of real estate.

Not to pick a fight but the following IS hard to resist --

Rambi says, "And then, there is always an alcohol-related accident or death every year."

Rambi also says, in describing a drunken driving scenario, "And then we just laughed and laughed as if it was just so funny that we'd almost been killed. That was SUCH a great night."
