Well, I wanted to see the security guards grab that jerk who ran on the field at the all-star game. But they cut away and wouldn't give us the pleasure of rubber necking him.

If they can take that responsibility, why not do the same with these shooters?

In one sentence, you have very effectively described CNN's (and the media in general) marketing strategy. Anyone who says they watch this stuff because of their "intense sadness for the victims, boo-hoo-hoo-wahh," is full of sh_t. Very well put.
