Try this: Gates decides to give away NT in exchange for a piece of the transactions made across it. Whose nightmare would that move be?

Good point, but Linux and Java developers would love it. NT would be a lot more expensive using that model.

If everyone is so convinced that breaking up Softie would make all the shareholders rich, why doesn't Softire do it volunarily?

Chaz,

Another option, DOJ breaks up MSFT; one shiny pebble still owns the operating system business and a lot of other aggressive shiny pebbles are let loose to interact all over the place.

Owning MSFT is still the best game in town.
