William -- stock market investment has done nothing to get the US public to save a cent. Quite the opposite. That is why we have to rely so damn much on foreign capital -- along with the out of this world trade deficit which MUST be offset with foreign capital inflows to balance the books -- unless of course we are prepared to see the dollar fade away in value. Which we are seeing right now BTW -- ouch. Darn -- I must seek comfort now.
