Altera has had one more stock split than Xilinx - three 2-for-1's - as opposed to a 3-for-1 and a 2-for-1 for Xilinx. Xilinx has had good success with a new family of devices - and is doing quite well. Re: "Do you think ALTR is a good buy" Yes - it is a great long term buy. ALtera also has new, very high density device families, new software, etc. and is positioned for excellent growth, capitalizing on future wafer process enhancements. The nature of the programmable logic business seems to support several equally capable vendors with incompatible architectures - unlike CPUs which seems to support only one main standard for high volume applications.
