Berkshire owns more than 8 percent of Coca-Cola and over 8 percent of Gillette, both of which have been hurt by continued weakness in overseas markets. First-quarter results suffered because of significant underwriting losses at newly acquired General Re. Underwriting results at GEICO were also lower as the insurer reduced premium rates to gain a further price advantage against its competition. The temporary weakness provides a unique opportunity to accumulate the stock for long-term appreciation. The company has a $24 billion bond portfolio along with about $13 billion in cash, which enables it to make substantial investments as opportunities present themselves. Legendary investor Warren Buffett will continue to allocate the capital.
