Well put. The comments I made were actually penned 20 years ago. The Demos have crossed the aisle as was evident when Clinton and Gore sounded more rational Republican than the Republicans during the NAFTA issue. At the same time the Republicans have lost much of their focus and got mired in a mess of social special interest groups. When there is prosperity like during the '50s, '60s, and '90s, politics is irrelevant. When inflation destroys the prosperity then it becomes relevant because the uglier side of leadership rules the populace and bad decisions are made to appease someone. Gephardts are everywhere waiting for an opportunity to lead and the upwardly mobile will eagerly follow if they don't get their fair share.
