6/18/99] BEIJING - The World Bank Friday said it had approved two loans worth a total of 500 million dollars for projects in China, AFP reported.

The first loan of 350 million dollars is for the construction of the 300-kilometre (18-mile) Wuhan (News) -Changsha (News) expressway, the central section of the highway linking Beijing to Hong Kong, it said in a statement.

When completed, it will connect the capital cities of the central Chinese provinces of Hubei and Hunan, it added.

The second loan of 150 million dollars and two million dollar credit is to protect the environment and provide clean water to five developing cities in Sichuan province.

The five cities are Chengdu, Deyang, Leshan, Luzhou, and Zigong (News) , the World Bank said.

Sichuan province in southwest China has a population of over 82 million or about six percent of China's total population.

6/24/99] MANILA - The Asian Development Bank (ADB) said Thursday that it has approved a 250-million-dollar loan to China for a road project in Yunnan province, one of the country's poorest regions, AFP reported. The project will involve the construction of a 147-kilometer (156 mile) four lane toll expressway between Yuanjiang and Mohei cities including the setting up of interchanges, bridges, tunnels and service areas, the Manila-based ADB said in a statement.

It will also include the upgrading of 540 kilometers (338 miles) of feeder roads and will involve the improvement of expressway management, operation and construction, the ADB added.

The ADB loan will cover 32.5 percent of the the total cost of the project with the rest shouldered by the Chinese government and the Yunnan provincial government.
