I'm not sure there is a big "first mover" advantage in e-commerce. In fact I think you will find the "second movers" have the advantage. They can learn from the mistakes (flameouts?) of the first entrants. DELL sure as hell wasn't a first mover. WMT will likely experience huge success on the net as a second mover.

I don't think people are buying fewer books online. But there is a lot more competition now than when AMZN started up. AMZN either watches customers drift elsewhere, or cuts prices even further. Both scenarios hurt the "growth" thesis, not too mention the effect on the bottom line.
