Chaz,

A lot of people are noticing the very short-term improved performance of the mutual funds relative to the index funds. One reason the information is getting so much attention is because it is happening so very recently, the importance for me being that it strikes me as a short-lived aberration.

It won't last for long. The mutual fund managers have their hands tied when it comes to outperforming the indexes. If you and I were limited to running our portfolios by the same constraints that limit the mutual fund managers, we wouldn't be able to beat the indexes consistently over the long haul either. One of us might if our name was Peter Lynch, but since there aren't two of him both of us wouldn't.
