For what its worth, I recently opened an account with WingspanBank, believing it to be a Checkfree client. I have been doing my online banking with Bank One over the last several months, but Wingspan looked like a better deal, so I decided to experiment with it.

My initial experience has been miserable. I'm not yet sure who deserves the blame, but I was dismayed right off the bat when I discovered that the fund transfers from my Bank One account to my new Wingspan account took 6 days. In other words, I instructed Bank One to pay Wingspan $XXX on July 2, and the credit wasn't actually posted until July 8. Upon speaking with Wingspan customer service (who have generally been courteous and helpful), they informed me that Bank One SNAILMAILS the check to Wingspan. Then, to make matters worse, Wingspan puts a HOLD on the check for 7 days! So, my July 2 deposit was not made available to me until approximately July 15!

To aggravate things even further, like an idiot I was transmitting bill payments during this same period of time, including two bills in excess of $3,000 apiece. Wingspan bounced each of them!

I have called Wingspan and let them know of my displeasure. They have told me they will "try to straighten things out" and are supposed to call me back by tomorrow.

In the meantime, I don't know what to think about all this. First of all, why in the world is Bank One, or Checkfree, for that matter, SNAILMAILING to an affiliated bank? I don't understand this...And secondly, why does Wingspan think they have to put a HOLD on a check from Checkfree? Aren't these checks supposed to be as good as a cashier's check?

This has been a very upsetting experience for me. I'm sold on online banking and am not ready to give up yet, but this sort of occurrence is what will scare others away for a long time. I'm hoping that my misfortune may force these banks (and perhaps Checkfree also) to solve these problems now.

Comments welcome...

P.S. I hope the recent bickering on this thread will end because without a doubt this has been the best, most informed board of discussion anywhere. The playground fighting that regularly occurs on other boards has historically been absent here, and we need to keep it that way. After all, is there any other discussion board anywhere that can brag that they are about to gather together from all over the nation for a 2nd annual bash?
