Yes, Abelson has probably done more to hold back sales of Barron's than any competitor ever could. I'm sure he has his fans, too but I also know it's the ONLY reason I cancelled Barron's for good after a few years of being a subscriber, and I have plenty of company. The thing is, despite all of the other fine material in Barron's... Ableson IS Barron's! He represents their viewpoint, philosophy, and what they believe in as a magazine (e.g. Bonds, not stocks... supreme arrogance, a huge Bear is coming just like the old days, stocks are overvalued terribly, watch out for small caps, daytraders are a bunch of fools, etc).

At first he's glib/funny to read, but after a while you can't help but realize that his intensely negative opinions about just about anything new or progressive overwhelms any trace of objectivity. You start to see all the damage he's inflicting from his influential perch with all of his too-glib harpoons, which are indeed mightier than the sword. Look at what he has to say about the daytrading boom, for example. Total Garbage, reflecting lack of / depth of knowledge! Typical.

I wish I could use words like "geocentrism." ;-) I think his self-hate and self-doubt may come from deeper reaches, going back centuries.
