The alternating bars may not be attractive to you but they're essential to someone using large fonts. Otherwise the messages run together. The first message line is the same distance from the last line of the previous message as it is from the second line of its own message. Try changing your font size and take pity. When the beta site first came up, I had asked for the alternating shading on al the lists. Another approach might be to move the message number up to the first line of the message instead of half way in between. That way it would be easier to see where the messages started and ended.
