Theres only one that is public now, Ariba. Well there are a few ariba wannabes like Commerce One but I don't touch the second-tier in software, unless its really a match of equals IT depts don't skimp on a software purchase. Anyway Ariba is purchasing, a niche of mfg... pretty good but manufacturing is troublesome so its not a clean space.

The next area coming is HRIS (Peoplesoft replacement)... I think employease is the leader and there are a few others, none public, this stuff is brand new. It takes a while to build which will protect from the trashy IPO problem we have in the consumer space. Look at the Red Herring top 100 private companies and you'll see the others there.

I listened to a call 2 days ago from the top enterprise analyst, he feels the morphing of web and software is what b-to-b is, (I agree), nothing against verticalnet but they are kind of the consumer approach to business commerce, which is fine as a first pass but they will top out unless they do some real automation, which basically means putting this enterprise software stuff that we have been working on for 10 years on the web...

To TomD regarding that business to business fund... I wonder why they don't have ariba on their list of investments - it could be timing/cost related which is fine, I wouldn't buy ariba here, but I would be afraid the management may not see the transition from websites to enterprise automation?
