Partly bravura (and considering the price of cabs here, you deserve something), partly a necessity, given all the one-way streets (which, of course, they sadistically change every six months or so). And at the moment they're ripping up the entire center of town. I had a really harrowing experience getting to the hairdresser last week. On zero notice they diverted nearly every public transport line. Way too many for them to change the signs, so they didn't bother. As one driver said: "Hey, lady, we're supposed to explain this to four million people?". I ended up walking for miles... I'm not going anywhere till September. If I were a Real Italian I'd be al mare anyway. But DO get in touch next time you're here.
