Awhile back I mentioned that online procurement software has the chance of producing a gorilla. I haven't studied the sub-industry, but it is probably still in the bowling alley, a good time to purchase stocks in applications software. To get an idea of the opportunity, it's where front-office software was a few years ago. (LindyBill would question that term, opportunity, when referring to investing in such small companies.)

Is Ariba the Siebel Systems of procurement software? Certainly too early to tell, especially with so many of the companies still being privately held. But for the folks who want to do research and follow a new industry as it plays the Gorilla Game, it should be a lot of fun and very profitable.

The customers' returns on investment are terrific, making the product easy to sell. For lots of details about that and the leading companies in each price range of the product, check out the following: informationweek.com

Forester Reseaerch says the industry will grow from $62 million in 1998 to $900 million in 1993, a 70% average annual rate of growth. Selecting the company that increases market share will easily produce 100% growth, if not more.

Damn! I really don't want to take the time to research a whole new sub-industry but this might be TOO compelling to avoid.
