Gary - Re: "They tended to plan their vacation a year in advance, be gone for 4 or 5 weeks, and spend the next few weeks at work talking about the vacation they just took and planning the next one"

I'm fairly certain that every employee at AMD's Dresden fab will forego all vacations and time-off, including coffee breaks, for the next 10 years just to see AMD become a success story.

Gary, I had very similar experiences in Germany. However, their view of work is much different that ours. Their work is secondary or lower priority in their lives. Family, community, and church are, generally, much more important. Also, the laws dictate that they must take their vacation. They have no choice.

If they miss a vacation and become ill, their insurance may not cover the illness, because they contributed to it by not taking vacation.

I can't fault them for their more "civilized" view of work. I miss that environment, but do realize that it makes it very difficult to compete globally.
