Sorry to tell you this but if Bell Atlantic says you are too far from the central office then you won't be able to get DSL from any provider to that location. All resellers of DSL have to go through the local phone companies for the last mile and regardless of what they tell you about "we checked and it's available!!!" they will come back to you later and say "Oops. You are a little too far."

I've got a lot of experience with DSL, cable, DAL installs. The DSL is causing the LEC's fits. They aren't prepared to support it or install it. It is not uncommon to go through an installation with a business customer and get to the day of the install only to have the phone company not show, multiple times. Installations have taken months. I've been on the wrong end of 90 day installations only to be told by Bart the install tech that "it wont work havaniceday". They are running around like chickens sans cabeza. This is a result of LEC institutional reluctance to forward support this new interloper. DSL is eroding their installed T1/frac T1 base. It is a money loser and they are grudgingly offering it. Don't even tal to me about load coils. Over 12,000' LEC reserves the right to charge for removal. They decide it'll be $10,000 and ask the reseller if they want to proceed.

Cable has its' unique set of installation headaches but the overall dynamic is different. Cable upgrades "neighborhoods". They groom nodes, install return lasers and when completed can say that a given region is 100% serviceable. Sometimes the customer service peeps get it wrong by including your house in the wrong region but if you get my point, it's at a macro level. It's inherently different.

Cable is scrambling to forward support, upgrade, hurry up and build a communications capable network. Phone company is reacting. They can't help but be reactive and glacial. Each will have their problems as they ramp up.
