As long as Kent is out of pocket, I'll take a stab by way of summary to your questions 1-3; 4 and 5 for Ken's optics only:

1. Who are JDSU's primary customers...Lucent, NorTel, [Siemens,] et al?

Basically, yes. Add Alcatel and, indirectly, users and layers of fiber networks, LVLT, GBLX, MFNX etc. As to Siemens, I don't know for sure.

2. Do you see any evidence that these "big arms dealers" to the telcos will want to produce the components that are currently bought from JDSU in-house?

The thinking seems to be that the systems suppliers/consolidators do not want to lose focus and are now outsourcing in a serious way. Historically, LU and NT had supplied these components in-house, but that seems to be changing; viz., the high percentage of revenues of JDSU and SDLI accounted for by the system suppliers.

3.Are there competing suppliers that can threaten JDSU's position?

Certainly. SDLI, to name one prominent competitor in pump lasers. E-tek, to a lesser extent, and many non-public companies developing their own R&D approaches to optical switching and transport that may rattle the existing market.

Regards. Steven

Sorry Brian,
The thread seems to have gotten to it for me except the company I work for. We are just beginning the implementation of a global fiber backbone which is in its infancy...IP SONET, self healing, OC-192(17,000 domestic miles purchased from Quest).
