IMO, taxes aren't about principles, they're about getting money to pay for stuff (sometimes dumb stuff)

I recently got a $90 ticket for not noticing a sign that dropped the speed limit on a divided highway 10MPH for a short stretch. Coincidentally, there was a cop in the bushes with a radar gun. It was 5 a.m. and I was the only car in sight. This had zero to do with public safety. This was a tax. They might as well have just put up a toll booth.
