OT Jill, One last comment on police/guns in Canada.
I found that becoming a police officer in most major cities is very difficult. If you don't have a university degree, your chances are very slim of getting in. I guess there are benefits(strangely) to having a somewhat higher rate of unemployment along with a relatively safe occupation of being a cop in Canada. Many graduates of social science degrees have a chance to make law enforcement a career. Those degrees are not going to help in getting jobs in Canada. Certainly, the high tech students are not interested in law enforcement. As a result of this competition and obviously higher standards, we are now getting a lot more intelligent police force. Forget about it if all you have is a high school diploma---that only worked in the old days. I find that graduates of Arts degrees (like political science, pyschology etc.) should make for great officers because they have a better understanding of society just from their education. At least the chances of some idiots becoming cops are significantly reduced.
This is just an observation i have made.

Less guns among public = better protected police.
Even legally owned guns can be stolen which would just increase the number of guns in the system.

Sorry if i offend Americans who view gun ownership as a right. I am just providing a Canadian perspective. Whatever environment you grow up certainly influences your views.
