>>7. IPO Commentary
On Wednesday, Drugstore.com (Nasdaq:DSCM), an online drugstore, soared almost 180% in its first day of trading. Investors snapped up shares in this offering as Drugstore.com became the first opportunity to invest in a pure online drugstore in the public equity markets. As a testament to the importance of this sector, Amazon.com (Nasdaq:AMZN) recently took a significant equity stake in the online pharmacy.
Looking ahead to next week, two Internet-based flower businesses make their debut, 1-800-Flowers.com (Nasdaq:FLWS) and FTD.com (Nasdaq:EFTD). The U.S. online market for flower sales is expected to grow substantially over the next few years: Forrester Research forecasts that it will increase from $212 million in 1998 to $906 million in 2003. Both companies utilize extensive networks of local bricks-and-mortar flower shops to fulfill the online orders.
