The problem with irix.
Hey it works great. But in the big unix picture very few machine run irix and most likely the smart en-gin_ears at SGI can quickly port the functionality of irix which to some extent is based on the bery bery good hardware to Linux. Now your selling super fast cat's meow hardware with the OS that's.... Look up in the sky, it a bird, it's a plane.. naahhhh it just a flocken Linux cluster. IT't the mindshare up and coming OS and it's not unix, it Linux. Yes we informed know that linux is unix. But we want to sell to the dumb masses and they don't want to be confused with the facts anyway. So I look upon it as a positive. More and more folks coming outta college have been exposed to Linux. This diferenciates SGI from Sun unix boxes and HP unix boxes. Now the only worry is Compaq. They have a new guy in charge, but he's an insider. So does he understand what a killer box an alpha with linux makes or is he a focused borg dog and regards this as small potatoes in the Compaq world of problems.
