<<My favorite sunrise was at a boat harbor in Rockport, Mass., also in October. >>

My favorite was in Port Washington on Christmas morning in '94. The winter was so warm I walked to the end of the pier that extends into Lake Michigan wearing only shorts and a tee shirt. When I reached the end it was pitch black. As I waited I could hear the trout feeding in the harbor and the mallard hens doing hail calls to hurry the sun.

Row after row of different blues started attacking the blackness over the lake. I could see flocks of diver ducks trading resting grounds for feeding grounds.

Looking toward shore I could see the silhouette of the old harbor town climbing the hill away from the lake and capping it off at the top of the hill was the old church.

I waited until full sunrise before walking back, feeling blessed but sad as I know I'll never experience anything that beautiful and peaceful again.
